Broken WIndows is an installation from my 2018 solo exhibition These Places I’m from.
This body of work speaks of communities in their pre-gentrified state, a reflection of youth, displacement, coming of age in declining areas -- and the effect of decaying infrastructure on mental health. An ode to the places I’m from, and the many places like them.
Images of broken windows from abandoned buildings are stenciled onto a variety of canvas clothing - which hang from a clothing line set in front of a painted aerial view of the various city blocks I grew up on. A lone ski mask, a history of housing inequality and disinvestment in neighborhoods of color. Bricks from a demolished home. Revitalization, revitalization for who?
